Teenage girls from around the world share their hopes and dreams in this groundbreaking book.

In Girl, 13: A Global Snapshot of Generation e, girls like Kate from Russia, Ilke from South Africa, Nathalie from Brazil, and Georgina from England share their hopes and dreams, their fears and passions. A collection of essays and stories from girls all over the world, Girl, 13 is the first truly multinational book and belongs on every girlŐs bookshelf.

Images of national emblems, currency and personal heroes give the reader an intimate view into the lives of the girls, their families, and their countries. Colorful and easy to read, the book has all the appeal of a girls’ magazine, with none of the superficiality.

Each girl’s entry begins with a full-size portrait and a survey in which she writes about everything from her favorite food to the person she most admires. In the “About Me” essay, she writes about her life, her school, and her family. In “My Best Day” she tells about her most memorable day, whether it was competing in a national singing competition, celebrating her grandmother’s 100th birthday, or picking grapes with her father. Then she imagines whom she would like to be when she grows up. Each entry ends with a “Did You Know” section; fun facts about the girl’s country, and some key words and phrases in the girl’s language.

Girl, 13 comes out at during this revolutionary era when technology and media have closed the gap of space and time. In these girls’ lifetimes, countries have gained independence, walls have come down, and boundaries have opened. This book breaks down the barriers further, enabling the young reader to find common ground with each and every girl included, regardless of how “foreign” her life may seem at first glance.

“Sometimes it seems to me that I am alone...absolutely alone. Nobody in this world can understand me. But really it is not so. Morning comes and with the morning come my friends as well. Then, I no longer feel like a white crow in this world, but feel part of it, like I belong in this society.”
--Kate from Russia, 13
